Oscars Bring Controversy Due to Lack of Diversity

With the Oscars coming up this weekend, it’s time to look at the big controversy of the 2016 Oscars.

It all started when the Academy announced the nominees for the 2016 Academy Awards. As they were announced, people were noticing that no actors or actresses of color were nominated for any of the awards. They pointed out that films such as Beasts of No Nation, Creed, Concussion, and Straight Outta Compton, that had actors of color, were not mentioned. As this controversy rose on social media, people began using the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite to express their disgust with the Academy.

The controversy accentuated even further when Jada Pinkett Smith, the wife of actor Will Smith, announced that she was boycotting the Oscars because her husband was snubbed for his role in Concussion.

Since then many other actors and actresses have also gave their thoughts to the controversy at hand. Some like Spike Lee and Will Smith joined in the boycott and others such as George Clooney gave opinions on how the academy could change.

Due to the backlash, the Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs vowed that she will try to diversify the members of the academy so this situation will not happen again.
