Sochi’s Opening Ceremony

By Evan Rigsby, Editor

The Winter Olympics started off with a bang. Floats, dancers, fireworks, and more were all the rage Friday. Sochi may well have created one the greatest opening ceremonies in Olympic history. People from all over the world came to see this spectacular sight and for the official opening of the 2014 Winter Olympics.

The ceremony started right at 8:14 P.M. with tons of lights and music. Russia made sure to include much of its history and classic background. About 40,000 people attended the opening ceremony at the Fisht Olympic stadium in Sochi. All the lights, decorations, and celebration came at a cost though. In 2007 Russia offered to host the Winter Olympic Games, that cost $12 billion. This year’s Olympics was estimated at a cost of $50 billion dollars. Russia also added increased protection. Over 37,000 officers have been hired for increased security, and Russia is working with the US to keep the games safe.

One of the most famous acts of the Opening Ceremony occurred when a Russian girl appeared to be in a dream. While being attached to wires, the girl floated around the ceremony grounds recalling letters of the alphabet. With each letter a Russian artist, writer, or place was shown. Then, the athletes from all over started to pour in. After speeches from the game’s committee members, Russian President Vladimir Putin officially opened the games.

Which country will be victorious?
