Goal!!! McHugh Field’s First
December 4, 2014
A few months ago, Owen Stevenson, class of 2017, scored the first goal on the new soccer field. This is an achievement in and of itself, but the fact that we won the game as well shows the athletic prowess here at Xavier. I sat down with Owen to get his side of the story.
In my interview with Owen, I had him describe to me the game. He said he went into the game with the mindset to win. He said the first ten minutes were the more intense than any other moment of the game. That’s when he scored his goal. He said he was shocked and did not intend on doing it. He said he got the ball, then started weaving and running for the goal. He kicked the ball and the opposing Goalie missed the ball.
“The ball went straight in”, he said. He then scored again. After that, he said, things wound down, the adrenaline left. The opposing team got more possessions, but the Xavier goalie made some critical saves. He said that many of the un-played players were given playing time which boosted morale for the whole team. As the time wound down, the score seemed in Xavier’s favor. As the last second ended, the scoreboard read 3-0 Xavier.
I wanted to know how Owen felt about being the first Athlete to ever score on the New Xavier field. He said he felt honored. He stated that his team gave him the support he needed to make the goal. He said it built confidence. If given the opportunity, he said he could make the goal again. It’s good to know that we have players on the field with that kind of confidence.
An achievement like this does not occur every day. Owen is a lucky person and was able to represent our school with confidence. He deserves to be honored, and so does the rest of the Xavier soccer team. They represent what Xavier students are… champions.

Being the first to score a goal in a game or during a practice is a great feeling. When you do it on a newly built soccer field at your school is a different story. In the end it is just a true honor because that field will be around for another 40 years or so and many people will play on that field and will remember him. To put a cherry on top of the sundae they went on to win that game 3-0. This win wasn’t just from Owen himself, he said that his team was a real good supporter for him and he probably couldn’t do it without them. The goalie also went on to save many goals which gave the opportunity for Xavier to score even more. He said that he didn’t really intend for him to score that goal, but I think it was destiny. Congrats to him and to the rest of the soccer team for the great win at home field.
