The Quest for the Golden College

By Evan Rigsby, Editor

As the college process begins for many students, the road for that perfect college can be far from easy. From testing to visiting schools, the list of requirements may seem to keep rising. Have no fear though, here are some tips to reach that perfect school.

  1. Take the Tests
    1. The SAT and the ACT are the two main tests colleges will look at. Although many colleges will look at SAT, the ACT is growing in popularity. Be sure to take the SAT several times because it collects the highest scores from each section. You can register for the SAT at College Board’s website and for the ACT on the ACT student website.
    2. In addition to the SAT, students are also able to take SAT 2 subject tests which are tests on only certain subjects such as history. For more details and sign up visit the College Board website.
  2. Take Career Surveys
    1. Student career and college help websites such as Naviance offer career surveys and advice to show what possible majors you may be interested in. With that done ahead of time, you can shape what specific colleges fit your needs.
  3. Visit Colleges
    1. With a specific list in mind, visit your colleges that interest you on weekends or long breaks. Also see your guidance counselor to see if there are any college representatives visiting your school.
  4. Apply for Honors and AP classes
    1. Try to take as many AP and Honors classes as possible. Colleges look at a student’s schedule strength as part of the application process. Also, some Honors and AP classes give college credits to specific colleges such as UCONN.
  5. Apply to several different colleges and see which ones you get accepted into

With these steps in mind, be sure to find that college that’s perfect for you and your major!
