Connecticut’s Biggest Snow Storm in History!
January 24, 2016
In light of the recent Winter Storm Jonas, let’s look back at Connecticut’s biggest snow storm in a 24 hour period: Winter Storm Nemo.
It was February 9, 2013 when winter storm Nemo would strike Connecticut. In just 24 hours, this storm would pound the state with 40 inches of snow! Hamden would claim the biggest total (40 inches) in Connecticut. With roads blocked and places closed, it seemed like a white nightmare (the picture attached is actually from a car dealership in Hartford on February 10, 2013, two days after the storm).
Aside from just Connecticut, Winter Storm Nemo was coined the “Blizzard of 2013.” On the impact scale it was classified as “Category 4,” which means the storm is “Crippling.” With the merging of a low-pressure system from the Northern Plains and another from Texas, this caused heavy snow to fall upon the Northeast.
With so many states of emergencies, many flights were canceled due to the snow and extremely harsh winds (for example, in Nova Scotia the winds reached up to 102 mph!). With so many travel bans, many citizens ended up being stuck on Long Island. In terms of electricity, over 700,000 individuals were left with no power and 18 deaths were recorded.
So, although winter storm Jonas wasn’t even near 40 inches in Connecticut, what will the snow season hold for us in the upcoming weeks?
