Winter Sports Season has Arrived!
December 13, 2016
Hey Freshmen, did you miss out on joining a sports team or club in the fall? Don’t worry, these are the sports you can join. Throughout the winter Xavier offers many sports and activities to keep you busy. These sports include basketball, hockey, indoor track, rifle team, swimming, and wrestling.
Basketball here at Xavier is very competitive, as they have tryouts and do make cuts, so nobody has a certain spot on the team until after tryouts. Last year our basketball team was fairly good, ending the season off 15 and 8. Tryouts have already taken place, so by now you know whether you are on the team or not, However, they may still need a few team managers.
Hockey is another big sport here at Xavier and just like most, because of it’s competitiveness, will make cuts. Xavier competes in the SCC Division 1, the most competitive division in the league. However, since not as many kids participate the odds may be higher than basketball. Hockey has just begun and the 2016-2017 practice and game schedule will be posted shortly.
Indoor track may be the most popular winter sport here at Xavier. Many kids participate and this is a great sport for you if you’re coming from cross country or plan on doing track in the spring. Track is a non-cut sport at Xavier and offers many events. These events consist of High Jump, Long Jump, Pole Vault, Triple Jump, Shot put, 28 Ib Weight, 55 hurdles, as well as the 55 to 5000 meter run. If you are interested see coach Stonier.
Rifle team is another popular sport here at Xavier as well as extremely competitive. Xavier competes in the Division one West Conference at the LL level. As a participant in the rifle team, you will compete against other competitive teams. Not everyone will get to shoot in meets but everybody will get to shoot for practice and when you get better, for meets. See coach Aaron King for details.
Wrestling is another sport offered at Xavier through the winter. No tryouts are required however, as the same with mock-shooting in Rifle, the noncompetitive wrestlers will compete in mock-matches against other schools in our Division. In wrestling, Xavier also competes in the Division one division class LL. If you want to join, contact coach Cunningham.
Lastly comes Swimming. The swim team here at Xavier is a very competitive team, competing against other schools in the highest Division. Every student gets onto the team and is guaranteed to swim competitively in a meet, however, only the first, second, and third placers score points for their teams. If you want to join see Assistant Coach Applegate for details.
I hope you decide to join one of the many teams we have to offer at Xavier, you will not be disappointed.
