The Legend of Korra: A Truly Worthy Fighting Game

“It has been years since any halfway decent Avatar game was made…”

The Legend of Korra is an independently developed game made by Platinum Studios, and it feels like returning to a really good old friend after a long time of being away. Previous installments for games in the Avatar series such as *The Burning Earth* and *Into the Inferno* left fans of the show disappointed in the repetitive nature and bland gameplay of these games. The games that followed these two were nothing more than small mini games with no real substance. It has been years since any halfway decent Avatar game was made, and we find it in the original cartoons sequel.

The show is set many years after the war with Fire Lord Ozai in the original series. The Legend of Korra takes place many years after the previous avatar, Aang, has passed away. Korra is his successor, hailing from the Southern Water Tribes. The show has gone through its first two seasons and is currently on its third season.

The game takes place in an alternate storyline in-between the second and third seasons. It has nothing to do with the main story itself for the most part, making quick references to events in the show but nothing plot-spoiling. The overarching story of the game involves Korra on a quest to regain her bending after being assaulted in an alley by a seemingly harmless old man. Although nothing special, it goes back to elements of the ending of the original Avatar series, where taking bending away became the climax of the entire show. The story merely provided a small reason for me to go on with the incredible fighting mechanics.

It must be noted that this game is not a full-priced release. Recent games such as Alien: Isolation and Destiny were full launch, $60 launch titles. Legend of Korra, however, is available on Steam for only $15. This is considered the high point of Indie development, but based on the absolutely stunning combat mechanics and great visuals makes this game extremely well done for the price that it is set at.
