Have you ever watched the Superbowl and wonder what the little game that played in between the commercials were? Well, you’re not alone!

The second most popular sport with the name “football” (fútbol), was created after the popularity of the British game, Rugby, which means that football originated in England. Around 1869 is when American Football truly started. The objective of the game is to get more points than the opposing team, and the general rules are as follows:

  • Both teams have 11 players on the field at a time.
  • The game starts with a kick-off by the chosen side.
  • The team that gets the possession of the ball is known as offense while the other team is known as defense.
  • The objective of the game is to score by kicking the ball through upright goal posts (called a field goal) or by getting the ball into the opponent’s end zone (called a touchdown).

While there are many more specific rules, those are the general, well known, rules. The biggest blow outs in NFL history come from 1976 and 2009. In a game against the Rams and the Falcons in 1976, the final score of the game was: Rams 59, Falcons 0. In 2009, a game against the Patriots and Titans held the same score, the final score being: Patriots 59, Titans 0.
