The Xavier freshman basketball team has delivered a very strong first half of the season, setting the tone for what is shaping up to be a special year. With an impressive 11–2 record at the midway point, this group has proven that hard work, discipline, and passion for the game can lead to consistent success. From huge wins against some of the toughest teams around, to hard-fought battles that tested our resilience, the first half of the season has shown exactly who we are and what we can become.
One of the defining characteristics of this season has been our ability to rise to the moment against strong opponents. Wins against teams like Glastonbury, East Hartford, and Danbury stand out as major highlights. These games were not just wins on the scoreboard; they were tests of composure, teamwork, and mental toughness. Each of those teams brought size, athleticism, and experience, yet we responded with energy, confidence, and an unselfish style of play that defines Xavier basketball.
Our 11–2 record not only r eflects the consistency we have built but also highlights the level of competition we face. The two losses we suffered against Wilbur Cross and Hamden were not the result of a lack of effort or preparation. Instead, they were hard-fought battles against well-coached, athletic teams that pushed us to our limits. In both games, we competed until the final buzzer, learning lessons that will only make us stronger moving forward in the season.
A major reason for our success so far has been the guidance of Coach Nelson. From day one, Coach Nelson has emphasized the importance of discipline, hustle, and playing smart basketball. Practices are intense and purposeful, focusing not only on skill development but also on decision-making and accountability. Coach Nelson constantly reminds us that effort is non-negotiable and that success comes when every player commits to the team’s goals rather than individual recognition.
Power forward LJ Graham believes that our identity on the defensive end is what truly separates us from other teams. According to LJ, our defense, hustle, hard work, and overall scrappiness are the keys to our success. Night after night, this team takes pride in locking in on defense, fighting for rebounds, diving for loose balls, and making opponents uncomfortable. That toughness and willingness to do the dirty work have allowed us to control games and maintain momentum, even when shots aren’t falling.
Confidence is another key ingredient fueling our momentum. Point guard Ethan Gains summed up the mindset of the team when he said he believes we may not lose another game all season. That confidence isn’t rooted in arrogance, it comes from the work we put in every day and the belief we have in one another. As a leader on the floor, Ethan sets the tone with his poise, communication, determination, and confidence, which reflect the beliefs shared by the entire team.
As we look ahead to the second half of the season, we know that nothing will be handed to us. Every opponent will bring their best effort, especially after seeing the success we’ve had so far. But we are ready for any challenge that our opponents are willing to throw a
