Who is Rey’s Father?

The Force Awakens has been out for around a month now and is arguably the third best Star Wars movie to date, only coming behind Empire Strikes Back and A New Hope. Several questions that were posed upon release of the trailers were answered (like where Luke was and what Snoke even looked like.) Even more questions were created from this movie however, like how did Captain Phasma get out of the trash compactor, how did Hux and Kylo Ren get off Star Killer Base, is Finn force-sensitive, who is Snoke, and most importantly, who are Rey’s parents? This article discusses who I speculate to be Rey’s parents.

The writers of the film were artful in leaving Rey’s parents up to speculation as there are three possible theories as to who they could be. The first of these theories is that Han Solo and Leia Organa or the parents. Within the movie, she immediately shows good piloting skills, comparable to the best pilot in the galaxy, Han Solo. And it is hard to believe that her finding Han’s ship, the Millennium Falcon, was just a coincidence. Also, while Han is not force sensitive, Leia is which gives viewers a good indication that Leia could be responsible for her force powers. Now many write this theory off by noting that they would have realized Rey was their daughter when they saw first saw her, however; it is important to note that while Han doesn’t recognize her, Leia kind of does. The first time that the two come in the same vicinity as each other, Leia picks Rey out of the crowd to hug her specifically. Han and Leia are known to have separated some time after Return of the Jedi and only met up again within The Force Awakens. It is possible that Leia could have been unknowingly pregnant just before Han had left and after her son, Ben Solo (Kylo Ren), became corrupt in the ways of the force, sent her off to Jakku so that she would not fail another child.

The next character that could be one of her parents is none other that Luke Skywalker. Like Rey, Luke was isolated on the desert planet Tatooine and also did not know who his father was, at least until the second movie, Empire Strikes Back. Rey also had an affinity for the light saber that Luke and his father, Anakin Skywalker used. Also, R2D2, Luke and Anakin’s personal astromech droid, only revealed the location of Luke’s whereabouts when Rey was in the same room as it. While there is not much more evidence to back up this theory, the entire Star Wars franchise has been based around the Skywalkers.

The final theory is that Rey is a descendant of Obi Wan Kenobi. While Kenobi might not be her father, there is a good possibility that he could be her grandfather. A potential hole in this theory is that as a Jedi, you cannot have a relationship or children, and if you are found with one of these, a Jedi would be charged with immediate expulsion from the Jedi Order. Still, the Jedi Order had collapsed with Anakin’s turn to the Dark Side in Revenge of the Sith so there is no reason to believe that Kenobi could have had a child after this event. And even before this, during the Clone Wars, he admitted to Anakin that he loved Duchess Satine. This further proves that he longed a relationship, despite that being against the Jedi code. While this proves that he could have had a child, and that child could have had another one, it is important to also see the parallels that Rey and Kenobi share. For example, they are the only protagonists that have used a British accent (excluding C3PO). This is important to note because there are several actors that naturally have British accents such as Liam Neeson and John Boyega but their characters use American accents instead. J.J. Abrams also noted that Rey’s isolation on Jakku was a big clue to her origin. This might hint at Obi Wan Kenobi’s isolation on Tatooine. Still, this isolation could refer to Luke Skywalker as well. Finally, while the light saber that Rey was drawn to was used by Anakin and Luke, Obi Wan actually had it in his possession longer than both of them combined.

In the end, director J.J. Abrams left the answer to the question “Who is Rey’s Father”, shrouded in mystery as any of these theories could be true. In my own opinion, I feel as though Luke would be the father as that is the obvious answer. Still, the Obi Wan theory and Han Solo/ Leia theory would be more fun. If I had to choose though, I would pick the Han and Leia theory because Rey would still technically be a Skywalker and the conflict between brother and sister would be very interesting to watch.
